Glass altar cross and candle holders "Sarayu" for Riga Lutheran Parish Center

Glass art and exhibitions · 2018/09/05

Glass artist Mārtiņš Kalniņš presented and gifted his highly acclaimed bachelor's thesis - a glass altar cross and candleholders to the centre Riga Lutheran Church. On September 2, 2018, the presentation of the glass altar composition "Sarayu" took place in the parish centre, with the participation of the parish pastor Kaspars Simonovičs, the head of the Glass Art Department of the Latvian Academy of Arts Vineta Groza, Mārtiņš' bachelor thesis supervisor Sandra Utāne and many other guests.

"Sarayu" is a bright and uplifting sculptural glass art composition created in the stacked glass technique using Ultra Clear (ultra clarified) sheet glass. It consists of three interconnected objects, in which the author wanted to symbolically depict Jesus' last breath while dying on the cross. The cross as the central image symbolizes Christ's suffering and death. Candlesticks as light objects are arranged on both sides of the cross in a bow shape representing the hills of Calvary near Jerusalem, the place where Jesus was crucified.
